Dr. Susan D. Rich is a double board-certified child/adolescent & adult psychiatrist and Distinguished Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. She earned a Doctor of Medicine (2001) and a Master of Public Health (1995) in health policy and administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from North Carolina State University (magna cum laude, 1989). She began her postbaccalaureate career in pre-clinical and clinical trials pharmaceutical research in Research Triangle Park, NC. Following her Master's degree, she developed women's health programs in preconceptional care, family planning, and alcohol/other drug treatment in rural Native American communities.
After UNC medical school, Dr. Rich moved to the Greater Washington, D.C. area in 2001 to complete a residency in psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center and a child psychiatry fellowship at Children's National Medical Center. She has served on the Executive Council of the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Society of Greater Washington (2008-2018), including a 2-year term as President; was appointed physician member of the Montgomery County Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse Advisory Council (2012-13); served on the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Board of Directors (1998-2011); and as Member in Training Trustee of the American Psychiatric Association Board of Trustees (2003-05). Dr. Rich is author of several articles, book chapters, and a book on prenatal alcohol exposure, The Silent Epidemic: A Child Psychiatrist's Journey beyond Death Row - Understanding, Diagnosing, and Treating ND-PAE. She is currently writing her second book - "Dirty Little Secrets" to inspire Gen Z's and Alpha's to embrace their inner strengths and tackles some of our world's greatest challenges. |
